This one-and-a-half-day course is designed for those with prior spirometry experience who require formal competency assessment. It covers the theoretical and practical aspects of spirometry measurement, alongside detailed interpretation of pulmonary function test results.

The course includes a written and practical examination on the second day, based on content delivered on day one.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Prepare protocols for consistent spirometry testing.
  2. Achieve technically acceptable results in accordance with BTS and NICE guidance.
  3. Interpret volume–time and flow–volume graphs accurately.
  4. Apply appropriate criteria prior to result interpretation.
  5. Identify abnormal results and disease patterns.
  6. Link curve patterns to affected lung function parameters.
  7. Understand the clinical relevance and limitations of spirometry across a range of respiratory conditions.
